The last regional election took place on 28–29 March 2010. The incumbent President of the Region, Mercedes Bresso of the centre-left Democratic Party, lost her seat to Roberto Cota, leader of Lega Piemont and floor leader of Lega Nord in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, who was backed also by The People of Freedom. Cota's lead of Bresso was of only 0.4%, in one of the Region's narrowest elections ever.

The Italian general election of 2008 took place on 13–14 April 2008. The election was won in Piedmont by the centre-right coalition between The People of Freedom and Lega Nord, as it happened at the national level. The People of Freedom was the largest party in the election with 34.3%, ahead of the Democratic Party (32.4%) and Lega Nord (12.6%).

The European Parliament election of 2009 took place on 6–7 June 2009. The People of Freedom (32.4%) was the largest party in Piedmont, ahead of the Democratic Party (24.7%) and Lega Nord (15.7%).
